During production, many years of experience in the design of steam locomotives were used, dating back to 1919, when the first 556.0 steam locomotive was manufactured. It did not boast any cutting-edge technical features, but was a unique balance of proven and operationally satisfactory features. With its operational performance, great versatility and structural simplicity, it was so successful that a total of 510 were produced within seven years. Without any fundamental structural changes, it became the most numerous series of steam locomotives at the \u010cSD.<br \/>\nThe designers of this successful locomotive series were based on the proven elements of the 555.0 series, from which the running gear was taken. They took over the locomotive boiler from the 475.1 series, except for some details. The reason for the development of the 556.0 series was the ever-increasing demands on transport after World War II, for the carriage of trains, where the performance of the 534.0 series was no longer sufficient.<br \/>\nThe book first deals with a brief history of the \u0160koda Works, the start of production and a general description of the locomotive series. The chapter on the operational use of these locomotives mentions the heavy-duty movement, some modifications during operation, and also extraordinary performances in freight transport.
